The United States, occupying the central part of North America, faces both the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. Its 50 states have an area of 9.6 million km2. The population in 2010 was 310.4 million. The country has a wide range of climates; the terrain varies from huge plains to river valleys and mountain ranges. Arable land in 2009 was 17.8% of the total land area. Agriculture is a minor sector, only 1% of GDP and employing 1.6% of the workforce. The Rice Belt of the United States comprises Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Texas, four southern states that grow a significant portion of the nation’s rice crop.
